Barrington is a historic town located on the central coast of Rhode Island. As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,310 residents. In 2005, Money Magazine and CNN/Money included Barrington on its' list of the "100 Best Places to Live in the United States." Barrington is a lovely place, dating back to the original settlers of the Mayflower. The land that is now the town of Barrington was granted to members of the Mayflower party by the King of England. Some places in the town today still retain the names from the original grant, such as Prince's Hill, named for Thomas Prince. Barrington was part of the town of Swansea, Massachusetts (which was part of the original Plymouth Colony) until it separated from Swansea in 1711. The town was named for Barrington, Somerset, where many of the settlers were from in England. In 1747, Barrington was ceded to the state of Rhode Island, as part of the city of Warren, but again gained its' independence in 1770 by the Rhode Island legislature. In the latter part of the 20th century, the town of Barrington attracted an increasingly affluent population. Many professionals and executives commute to work in Providence. Attractions include Barrington Town Beach, overlooking Narragansett Bay. This four-acre beach has lifeguards on duty from June to September. Season parking passes for the beach are sold at the gatehouse.

Barrington Weather & Climate

Southeastern Massachusetts has a continental climate with maritime influences. Some areas are classified as humid continental, and others are humid subtropical. Summers are warm and humid with the possibility of thunderstorms. Occasionally these storms are severe with hail and heavy downpours. Winters are cold and snowy, with most snowfall occurring between December and March. Spring and autumn are mild, but changeable depending on the wind direction and jet stream. Cool sea breezes are common, especially in spring. Fog is also commonplace, especially in spring and early summer. Tropical storms or hurricanes are possible, especially in early autumn, but not common. Most hurricanes weaken by the time they reach Massachusetts.
